About the Opening Books Project

Opening Books is a special project of DatAchieve Digital designed to promote access to the many collections of archival and historical books held by government, private, and academic institutions.

Illustration - Opening Books, Opening Doors As an increasing number of our nation’s important documents are published in electronic format, librarians and archivists across the country are struggling to collect and preserve this information for future generations. At the same time, historical printed documents continue to age and are frequently inaccessible to the public. While many have been transcribed or digitized, the experience of viewing the book in its original format is lost. The Opening Books Project will enable librarians, historians, and archivists to make important works available to students, scholars, and the general public in an interactive page turning book format while keeping the originals safe and untouched. Library and museum kiosks will bring books out from behind the glass and put them in the hands of visitors. Online access and interactive classroom CD-ROMs will provide a tangible context to historical books, bringing them to life for students and academics.
